Eloping from overseas

The minute you say to each other "let's just elope" getting married becomes a very simple matter. You only have three decisions to make - where, when, and by whom.

Australia is a very easy country to marry in if you are a visitor from another country. And Brisbane Queensland is a wonderful place to start your holiday and your married life. Top that off with an experienced and creative celebrant (an officiant appointed by the Australian Government to conduct legal marriage ceremonies) who is well-traveled, comfortable with different cultural expectations, and skilled at working with people at a distance, and you've got the makings of a wedding that will surpass your dreams.

In Brisbane the sun shines 300 days a year, and our climate allows outdoor activities all year round. Add a major international airport and convenient access to a wide range of wonderful waterfront locations, parks, gardens, as well as innumerable interesting indoor and outdoor locations, together with big city variety, and you have everything you need conveniently to hand and usually at a lower cost than you will pay back home. (For example, for the cost of a registry office ceremony in England you will have a creative and interesting ceremony in a lovely location, on a day and at a time you choose, with enough change for a night in a luxury hotel afterwards).  Best of all, the trees are green and flowers are in bloom all year round.

Making the arrangements
To arrange your marriage ceremony all you need to do is provide your celebrant with a properly completed, signed and witnessed Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before the ceremony can take place.  This can be completed in another country but in that case your signatures must be witnessed by an official at the Australian Embassy or Consulate, or by a Notary Public. There are no licenses to buy and no residential requirements - so you can marry the day you arrive.

To book your wedding with me you will need to contact me to ensure I am available on your chosen day, complete my booking form and pay my fee. No interviews are necessary (we can work entirely by email, phone, or airmail)

Make sure you check out the legal requirements as you must comply with the notice period and with the requirement to show your celebrant official documents proving your identity, date of birth and that you are free to marry.

Choosing where to marry
There are no rules in Australia about how and where you marry.

  • You can be married day or night on any day of the year (24/7)
  • A legal marriage can be performed anywhere you choose so you can be married  in a park, by the river, in a restaurant, a private residence, a wedding chapel, on a beach, in an interesting historical building or even surrounded by kangaroos, koalas, water dragons or other wildlife
If you let me know the type of venue you have in mind it will be my pleasure to suggest some places that meet your criteria and are within easy access of your accommodation. I can also help you with advice if you wish to have a professional photographer attend  your ceremony (a very good idea!), plus any other information you might need to make your dream wedding a reality.

Your marriage ceremony
There are no limitations on what you may include in a legal civil marriage in Australia.  Love & Legals wedding ceremonies, while not bespoke ceremonies, are tailored to each individual couple so your wedding ceremony will be everything you could wish it to be. With my help you can write your own vows, and make your wishes known about what elements of the traditional wedding ceremony you would like included. You will also choose the style of your wedding. Casual, fun, and laid back, or as formal as you like. It is up to you.
We did not want any fuss and wanted a warm ceremony. You created both of these for us. We loved your ideas about including the children and small surprises on the day, eg copy of our vows and photo of rings on shells. Your sensitive humour made us feel relaxed. - Don and Jenny, who came from the UK to be married on the beach during a family holiday

It was all very relaxed and although we had never actually met before you made us all feel very at ease. it was fun but with the serious element where necessary. You did a brilliant job. You gave an extremely personal service, tried very hard - and succeeded - to find us the right tree! Dealing with paperwork was clear and given the proper amount of solemnity. Thanks again for helping to make it such a lovely memory for us.
- Pam and Ken who came from the Orkney Islands of the north coast of Scotland with the request that they be married under the largest tree possible. A fig tree was the logical choice.

Dear Jennifer, Thank you very much!
Now we continue our holiday in Australia. Best regards - Alexander and Kristina, who married surrounded by Kangaroos the day after they arrived in Australia from Sweden. They surprised family and friends back home with a very cuddly wedding  announcement sent by email

Our Warm and Wonderful Weekday Wedding with Jenny far surpassed what we were expecting. When we decided to “elope” whilst on holiday in Australia, we had thought we would be having a fairly dry ceremony in a registry office but Jenny’s service meant that what we had was very much different from those expectations. As we were organising our wedding from overseas, Jenny’s professionalism and attention to detail was key. Jenny helped us choose our venue and provided us with internet links and photos of some of the places available. She gave us step by step guidance regarding all the Australian legal requirements and her prompt and complete communication was excellent, removing any worry at our end.  She anticipated our questions making the process as easy as if we were in Brisbane!  As we were unfamiliar with Brisbane, we particularly appreciated her thoughtfulness and “thinking for us” by leading us through the process to enable us to collect our official certificate from the Registry Office in Brisbane, rather than us having to wait for it to be posted out.  We were both very moved by the ceremony itself and it was Jenny’s small, personalised touches that really made it so special for us. We would very strongly recommend Jenny to anyone looking for a celebrant!-
Jane and Euan married at Roma Street Parkland the day after they arrived in Australia.
